In oil painting, the “Tension of Opposites” is a powerful conceptual framework where contrasting elements pull against one another to create energy and depth. Oil paint is uniquely suited for this because its chemical properties allow for extreme physical contrasts—from thin, watery washes to thick, sculpted ridges.

This tension is often achieved through the interaction of opposing forces on the canvas, such as:

• Warm vs. Cool: Using fiery cadmiums against icy ultramarines  to create a sense of vibrating atmosphere.

• Light vs. Dark: Employing chiaroscuro to pull a subject out of deep, obsidian shadows into a piercing, direct light

• Texture vs. Smoothness: Contrasting flat, blended surfaces with aggressive, palette-knife impasto
